My debut memoir, Born to Be Public, came out almost two years ago, and I am pivoting from perpetual brooding to gratitude for a moment because, somehow, it is still finding new readers from all over. How can I not be thankful for that? Never in my wildest dreams did I think that this book would end up places like NPR and Oprah Daily and a library in Stockholm. BITCH, WHAT????
Now, I'm elated to announce the audiobook, which I narrated myself! Pretty good for someone who can't even read!!!!!!
I am not being dramatic when I say that recording this audiobook was one of the hardest things I've ever done. It's just you, alone in a recording booth, for hours, reading your embarrassing sex stories out loud to the engineer who occasionally interrupts to say things like, "Can you go back to the part about shitting on his dick?"
What a nightmare—for me, and Michael, the poor engineer!
After the first session, I came home and slept for fourteen hours. I slept through an appointment the next day! I lost my voice! And I had to go back to do it again multiple times.
Many more hours in the studio, and, like, forty boxes of Bigelow green tea, and countless lozenges later, I finally finished recording my audiobook. And I think it sounds, dare I say, good????
It's available everywhere, but I love Libro.fm because they split their earnings with independent bookstores. So, press play and find out if I pronounced "unbridled" correctly. (Probs not!)
As always, thanks for reading (and, hopefully, listening!).
XO,
GM
